The four-step checklist to follow before you create a new sports program
Before embarking on a new sport participation program, one of the frameworks I recommend organisations run their opportunity through is "PASS":
P - is the program opportunity Purposeful?
Fundamentally, does the program align with your strategy? Are you doing it for the right reasons?
A - is the program opportunity Accessible?
How easily can you reach the target community, or vice-versa? What level of friction or barriers are there to overcome to get things off the ground?
S - is the program opportunity Sufficient?
How large is the potential engagement your program can achieve, and is this sufficient in regards to your objectives?
S - is the program opportunity Sustainable?
Will this be a one-hit wonder?
The point of the framework isn't to deter organisations from delivering a one-off program that impacts 7 people in a remote community. Rather, it serves to provoke some critical reflection in the planning process to ensure decisions are aligned with the organisation's strategy and resource capability, to avoid chasing the next shiny thing.
But if your concept only satisfies 1 or 2 of the criteria, it might be a sign to...well, pass.
